Hi Griselda

Chapter Sixteen: This chapter is mostly about fear. First, the Wilson's car breaks down and Al and Tom tell the family to go on without them but Ma says no, they will stick together as a family. Tom and Al go into town to look for spare car parts which makes Ma fear for them. Once in town, the brothers run into a man who starts telling them of his troubles and the troubles in California. He says that California only needs 800 people but 5,000 messages were sent out and 20,000 people saw it. Now the family fears for themselves and if they will be able to find work once they get there? I was just wondering, why do you think we never figure out what Ma's real name is?

Chapter Seventeen: This chapter is about the roles of men changing in society. At first, they were farmers who had their own family to feed. Once on the road, however, they were no longer farmers but "migrant men." They became one huge family and/or community and became law enforcers or whatever was needed. Do you think that this is going to work out or do you think people are going to start playing by their own rules and taking over?

Chapter Eighteen: This chapter is a very tough time for the Joads. They stop off to rest for a while but then things get a little crazy. First Noah claims that he wants to stay right where he is and that he'll live off the fish in the river. This makes Ma think that their family is falling apart. Then Granma's health starts deteriorating and she starts to hallucinate. The woman comes into the tent to try to make her feel better, but who is the woman? She just came out of nowhere. Ma makes her leave the tent because Granma is too tired and weary. Sadly, the police come and tell the Joads and Wilson's that they have to leave. However, Sairy's health is also going bad and Ivy says that they have to stay there. That night, the Joads get pulled over for an "agricultural inspection" and you find out that Granma has died.
