I think when they get to California, they are going to end up not finding a place to go for a while. They are going to arrive there and aren't going to be sure about what to do. I also think that because it is going to be a long, hot trip, someone is going to and up getting sick and/or dying which will be another burden on them. That is just my prediction though.


Chapter Ten- Well my first question is, why did Tom go with them? He knew that he would be breaking his parole if he did.I also agree with you that Tom's mom did seem anxious. Who wouldn't be if they had to pack up their entire life and move across the country not really sure what to expect? I like that they are introducing more characters into the plot; Rose of Sharon and Connie. I wonder why Grandpa really wants to go and then at the last second decided he doesn't. Do you think he was just scared? Finally, do you find it kind of suspicious that Ma would give "Granpa" some sleeping syrup? I mean, who carries that around with them and then just decides to give it to someone?


Chapter Eleven- I think that you are right about how the animals are messing up the abandoned houses but I don't know if I would say that a theme is "destruction by animals." I don't think that the animals going into the homes and messing it up is playing an intricate part to the story; something that could be applied to the whole book.

Chapter Twelve- I think that Steinbeck is writing this book as going back and forth between chapters. He'll actually got the real story with Tom and what he is doing but then the next chapter will be the narrator talking about thoughts and ideas of the overall characters; the farmers who have to move from Oklahoma to California and the turtle in the middle of the road. Chapter twelve is one of those chapters where the narrator is talking about the mass group of farmers who have to travel across the states. You hear them complaining about their cars breaking down and how people try to sell them faulty parts so they can make money. The people know they are getting scammed so they try to make it from rest stop to rest stop so they can fix it themselves and save the money. Some people also explain how they get rides from others so they can make it to California that way.
